Taiwan’s greenest Christmas tree: 20-meter giant made from 7,000 recycled bottles in Keelung

As Christmas approaches, many Christmas trees across Taiwan are drawing crowds. This year, Keelung has created a uniquely meaningful one.Co-organized by the Keelung City Government and local churches, not only is a Jesus-themed Christmas town set up at Ocean Plaza, but the event also promotes sustainability by crafting an eco-friendly, creatively designed Christmas tree from over 7,000 plastic bottles. This allows the public to engage in environmental awareness while learning about the origins of Christmas.

NetizenWu Wei-yi Aikesshared this year’s eco-friendly Christmas town in Keelung on the“Travel is Awesome!”online community, giving everyone a look at a different kind of Christmas event. As everyone knows, Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus, so this year the Keelung City Government specially collaborated with many local churches to create large lantern displays depicting the story of Jesus’ birth, allowing both adults and children to rediscover the meaning of Christmas beyond just taking photos.

This year, a colorful light tunnel has been specially set up, with cool lighting adding to the festive atmosphere. Hanging nearby are recycled CD discs, where visitors can write their wishes or blessings, creating memorable and unique wish cards. In addition, the highlight of the sustainability effort is undoubtedly the “plastic bottle Christmas tree,” standing tall in the square. Made from over 7,000 bottles and reaching 20 meters in height, it requires no extra decoration—the recycled materials shine even brighter when lit up.
