Taiwanese athletes to compete in the Guam International Marathon, starting at 3 AM on April 13

The Guam Visitors Bureau has released its 2014 event calendar, featuring a greater variety of sports activities and themed carnivals compared to previous years. These events aim to showcase Guam’s diverse and rich local culture, not only supporting the development of local communities but also hoping to attract more tourists to the island.

Key events in 2014 include the Guam Ko’ko’ Kids Fun Run, the Guam International Marathon, the Guam Micronesia Island Fair, the Guam Open-Air BBQ Party, the Guam Ko’ko’ International Marathon, as well as the Guam Cycling Festival and the Guam Cycling Tour. In addition, village chiefs across Guam have planned vibrant and diverse Chamorro Village Carnivals, showcasing each village’s unique characteristics through food, local produce, art carvings, music, and more—giving visitors the chance to experience the distinctive local lifestyle and island culture.

Guam also hosts a series of sporting events, such as the Marianas Cup Beach Volleyball Carnival, the Smokin’ Wheels Off-Road Race, the Lacoste Guam Futures Tennis Tournament, the Guam Citizens Table Tennis Championship, the Guam-Marianas International Fishing Tournament, the XTERRA Guam Triathlon Championship Cup, the Guam Rugby International Tournament “True Grit,” the Guam Governor’s Cup Women’s Golf Tournament, and the Eastern Division University College Baseball League friendly matches.

Spring in Guam is perfect for running. Just last week, the Guam Ko’ko’ Kids Fun Run wrapped up successfully, attracting a record number of participants with over 400 children taking part. Among them, 12-year-old Irie Kazuki from Japan completed the 3.3 km race with an outstanding time of 8 minutes and 42 seconds. Additionally, the professional event for adults—the “Guam International Marathon”—will officially start at 3 AM on April 13, with Taiwanese athletes also set to compete.

This international event blends the vibrant spirit of Guam’s Chamorro culture. Before the starting gun fires, a fun pre-race party will take place, complete with a live DJ to hype up the atmosphere and energetic Chamorro cultural performances to cheer on the runners. Later that afternoon at 4 PM at the Governor Joseph Flores Memorial Beach Park, a “Finish Line Carnival” will be held. In addition to award ceremonies, there will be live band performances, cultural shows, as well as BBQ and beer for participants to celebrate their achievements. The event will conclude with a fireworks display, marking a perfect finale to the Guam International Marathon. Registration closes on April 8.
