Miaoli Dawo Hidden Gem: Admire Tung Blossoms by Day and Fireflies by Night

Both tung blossom viewing and firefly watching are hugely popular, and Miaoli County’s Dahu Township’s Dawo Cultural and Ecological Area boasts both,Starting April 19, the Dawo Cultural and Ecological Association is hosting the Dawo Tung Blossom Music Festival and a Firefly-Guided Tour event. During the day, visitors can stroll along the tung blossom trails, and at night, they can enjoy the dreamy scenery of twinkling fireflies; this year, three additional “firefly-viewing hidden spots” have been added, which visitors can explore in depth with guides.

The ecological association stated that recently, every night in the Dawo Mountain area, large numbers of fireflies can be seen dancing, with the mountains and valleys aglow with their light. The estimated count reaches over 100,000, mainly consisting of black-winged fireflies and mountain window fireflies.From the 19th to May 10th, from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM each evening, a volunteer service desk will be set up in the firefly park to provide guided tours.Visitors who haven’t made a reservation can also enter by following the guide ropes.

The Dawo Tung Blossom Music Festival and firefly-viewing activities will kick off at 9:00 AM on the 19th at Dawo Sanliangsan Square. The organizers have arranged a series of song and dance performances. On the 19th, 20th, and 26th, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, a shuttle bus will be available at the convenience store in front of Dahu Township Office, departing hourly—visitors are encouraged to take advantage of it.

The ecological association recommends that the best time for firefly viewing in the Dawo Mountain area is from nightfall until around 8:30 PM. When viewing fireflies, visitors should try to avoid wearing perfume or mosquito repellent, as fireflies tend not to approach if these scents are present.
