Home to Malaysia’s first “oil well” – Enjoy the laid-back charm of Miri city

Located in northern Sarawak, Miri is the host city of the annual Borneo Jazz Festival and is widely known in Malaysia as the “Oil City.” In 1910, Western oil companies drilled the historically significant first oil well in Sarawak, the “Grand Old Lady,” on Canada Hill. This attracted many Westerners to settle here, making Miri one of the most modernized cities in Borneo. Most buildings in downtown Miri are no higher than three stories. Though lacking modern skyscrapers, their facades are painted in bright, vivid colors, making visitors feel as though they’ve stepped into a colorful world. Strolling through the streets, with a gentle breeze in the air, you can enjoy a leisurely, laid-back vibe full of delightful surprises and beautiful sights at every turn.
