Celebrate Mother’s Day at Houli Horse Farm in Taichung – Free Admission for Moms

To celebrate Mother’s Day and pay tribute to moms everywhere, Houli Horse Farm in Taichung City is offering free admission for mothers on Mother’s Day, May 11. Visitors who come with their own mother or their partner’s mother for a family outing can enjoy this complimentary offer.

Houli Horse Farm is the only publicly operated horse farm in Taiwan, covering an area of approximately 15 hectares. According to the Taichung City Government Tourism Bureau, which manages the site, the farm was established during the Japanese colonial period. After Taiwan’s retrocession, it was used by the military as a base for breeding military horses and training cavalry. As technology advanced and the need for cavalry diminished, the farm was handed over to what was then Taichung County Government in 1997 (the 86th year of the Republic of China) and was repurposed for tourism and leisure activities. It is now one of the most well-equipped horse training centers in the country and served as one of the main venues for the “2018 Taichung International Flower Expo.” In the future, it will be developed into an equestrian-themed park featuring local flowers.

The farm still retains well-preserved historical buildings from the Japanese colonial and military administration periods. The serene, tree-lined grounds offer fresh air, shaded by decades-old camphor trees, dragon cypresses, sweet gums, and other rare tree species. The recreational facilities at the farm focus on horses—adults can enjoy riding on their own, while children can take guided horse rides and also experience a variety of fun activities such as horse-drawn carriage rides, archery, and go-karting.

Nearby attractions around Houli Horse Farm include Zhongshe Flower Market, Yuemei Sugar Factory, Lihpao Land, Chang Lien-Cheng Saxophone Museum, the Old Tai’an Railway Cultural Area, and Phoenix Mountain Trail. Additionally, the starting point of the renowned Houfeng Bicycle Path—the most famous cycling trail in Taiwan—is located right in front of the horse farm. Visitors can bring their own bikes or rent them locally to plan a half-day or full-day “Horse & Bike” tour, experiencing Taichung’s unique two-horse (equestrian and bicycle) culture.
