A 35-meter overhanging cliff — Canada’s glacier “skywalk” defies gravity

Gravity-defying, heart-pounding scenic platforms continue to be built around the world. And now, this incredible Canadian Glacier Skywalk has officially opened its doors, welcoming travelers to experience its marvels.

The Glacier Skywalk, jutting 35 meters out from the edge of a cliff, is an extension of the Jasper National Park pathway in Canada. This glass-floored walkway hangs 280 meters above the Sunwapta Canyon within the national park..

After five years of construction, it finally opened to the public on May 1st this year, with an estimated cost of $19 million CAD (approximately 570 million NTD). Beyond its stunning scenery, owner Brewster Travel Canada highlights its educational value. Along the 400-meter cliff-edge walkway leading to the glass platform, visitors can engage directly with diverse natural themes, including glaciology, biology, and ecology.

The Skywalk is about a one-hour drive from the renowned Canadian Rockies near Jasper, Alberta. Visitors must take a five-minute bus ride from the Columbia Glacier Discovery Centre to access the glacier skywalk. Open daily from May through October, adult tickets are approximately 685 NTD (CAD$24.95), while child tickets are around 340 NTD (CAD$12.50).

However, not everyone is thrilled about the Glacier Skywalk. Some environmentalists have protested the commercial development. Canada’s CBC network quoted the Alberta Wilderness Association as stating that such structures do not belong in national parks, as they could negatively impact local wildlife and the broader ecosystem. In response, Brewster Travel Canada said the project underwent thorough environmental assessments before construction, aiming to bring visitors closer to nature.
