518 Taipei City Museums Day – Explore One Museum, Join the Treasure Hunt & Win Prizes

In response to the annual "International Museum Day" on May 18 designated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) under UNESCO, the Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs has launchedthe "518 Taipei City Museums Day"event this year, inviting citizens to join in the celebration at various museums on May 18. On that day, internationally renowned experts will also come to Taiwan to participate in the "Taipei City Museums Forum," exchanging ideas on the future vision of museums.

Currently, a total of about 35,000 museums across 143 countries around the world respond to International Museum Day on May 18. This year’s international theme is “Museum collections make connections,” and Taiwan is one of the participating countries. This year in Taipei, the "518 Taipei City Museums Day" will connect 78 museums and cultural facilities within the city, inviting the public to visit these cultural venues on that day.

In addition, the “Taipei City Museums Forum” will be held on the same day at the 4th floor performance hall of the Taipei Broadcasting Station in Yuanshan Park of the Taipei Flower Expo. Rarely have such internationally acclaimed experts been gathered in Taipei to discuss museum visions with registered participants. Among them are Dutch designer Herman Kossmann, who has curated exhibitions such as the “Rotterdam International Architecture Biennale – Main Exhibition Hall” and the “Jewish Historical Museum”; Takuya Takei, a member of the internationally renowned multimedia team “TeamLab”; and leading city museum architect Kim Kwang-yu, all of whom are highly distinguished figures.

The Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs’ Urban Museums Project Office has produced a city museums map, compiling visiting information and May event details for 76 public and private cultural venues in the Taipei area. The map can be collected at select venues and MRT stations. While visiting, don’t forget to explore“One Museum, One Fun”— from May 18 to May 30, share your visit photos and reflections on the “My City Taipei – 518 Taipei City Museums Day” Facebook fan page for a chance to win a limited-edition EasyCard featuring the gouache painting “Near Yuanshan” by veteran artist Kuo Hsueh-hu. The list of winners will be announced on the official website on June 6.
