Gaze at the “Starry” Skies of the Southern Border – Kenting’s Southern Cross Star Party Kicks Off on the 31st

“If the sky is dark enough, the stars will appear; if people are quiet enough, the stars will shout!” Apart from its breathtaking ocean views, Kenting’s Cape Maobitou is an ideal spot to admire the famous Southern Cross constellation due to minimal light pollution. On the 31st, Pingtung County Government is hosting the “Hengchun Southern Cross Star Party,” inviting all stargazing enthusiasts to join in marveling at the beautiful night sky of the southernmost part of the country.

Hengchun’s exceptional natural and geographical environment makes it a top choice for both exploring the starry sky and understanding marine ecological wonders. This year, Pingtung County Government is organizing the “2014 Hengchun Southern Cross Star Party and National Taiwan Science Education Center’s Pingtung Mobile Science Tour,” which not only introduces visitors to the cosmos and astronomy but also promotes the concepts of light pollution prevention and starry sky restoration.

The highlight of the event is the “Hengchun Southern Cross Star Party,” taking place from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM on the 31st at the Cape Maobitou parking lot in Kenting. This event will feature various domestic and international astronomy groups showcasing their unique celestial content, while renowned astronomy experts will share their lifetime insights with the public. The site will also offer an inflatable digital planetarium and telescope viewing experiences, allowing participants to explore the mysteries of the night sky up close, as well as view the wonders of seasonal constellations inside the planetarium.

Registration for the Star Party is now open until May 25th, with a limit of 2,000 participants and free admission. Members of the public can sign up via the“Hengchun Southern Cross Star Party” official website.Organizers also remind stargazers that certain areas will have light control measures in place. If you plan to bring a flashlight, please cover it with red paper to avoid disrupting telescope viewing and astrophotography activities.
