For beginners, Rio’s juices—or juice bars—can be a bit overwhelming.
Vidigal Peixoto, a family member of Polis Sucos operating in areas such as Ipanema in southern Rio de Janeiro, says that when Latin people first arrived here, they were always crazy about the dazzling array of fruits on display in the store. According to Peixoto, his father opened the first juice bar in Rio in 1958, and these fruits, which you can smell and touch, were absolutely incredible to early immigrants!

Local Fruitssugar apPle, also known to Taiwanese as the sugar apple, a fruit rich in antioxidants and known for its anti-aging benefits, is one of the most popular summer juices at Polis Sucos! There’s also the tiny red fruit, the West Indian cherry, which has the highest vitamin C content of any fruit on Earth. And then there’s the cashew apple (also called caju), originally from northeastern Brazil, which is the large, juicy, orange-red pepper-shaped accessory fruit that grows at the base of the cashew nut—it’s also the perfect fruit for adding smooth texture and sweetness to your refreshing summer treat!

Additionally, the nut of the caju is what we know as the cashew. This yellow, mango-shaped fruit "caja" is also packed with vitamins A, B, C as well as iron and calcium. Daily fruit is almost a sacred ritual in Rio and certainly a refreshing way to beat the heat. Travelers coming to Brazil for the World Cup should not forget to grab a juice to cool down and absorb natural sucrose, antioxidants, and vitamins!

The variety of fruits here is enormous—even some you’ve probably never heard of—ranging from avocados, pineapples, and custard apples to yellow pitayas, apricots, and ackee, among others. You can find these juices on any street in Rio’s Zona Sul (southern zone)! You can opt for freshly squeezed, unsweetened juice made from whole fruit rather than pre-cut pulp.
Natural energy drinks are also highly recommended here—from guarana berries to cupuacu, and the refreshingly delightful and beloved passion fruit (maracuja) juice, all are definitely worth trying. There’s also the quite popular graviola juice, from a spiky, pear-sized green fruit that is said to be very beneficial for digestive health.

In Barra da Tijuca and at the Globo TV headquarters in Projac da Globo, you can find the four current Polis Sucos locations. The shop manager highly recommends the mango and passion fruit combination. He says the sweet and sour flavors are simply a perfect match!
