A riot of colors in full bloom—Hydrangeas bigger than faces at Zhuzihu in Yangmingshan

After entering the fifth lunar month, the famous calla lily season on Yangmingshan in Taipei City is gradually winding down, making way for the magnificent sea of hydrangeas.

Symbolizing “hope,” hydrangeas are also known as ajisai, hydrangea, or viburnum. Their blooming season lasts roughly from May to July each year, with common colors including powder blue, purple, white, and pink. The blooming hydrangeas boast flower heads bigger than faces, and their vivid, eye-catching hues always draw people in for a second glance.

According to the Taipei City Department of Civil Engineering, acidic soil results in hydrangeas with bluish-purple flower heads, while alkaline soil gives them pink or red hues, making it a rather unique plant. The cool and humid climate of Zhuzihu, along with its acidic soil characteristics, is perfect for their growth. Currently, the area around the Shuiche Liao Trail is in full bloom.

According to the reporter’s on-site visit, the hydrangea gardens around Zhuzihu vary slightly in color and size, with most adopting an entry fee system—charging 100 NTD per person. Upon leaving, visitors can select 1 to 2 bundles of hydrangeas to take home.

Ms. Huang, a visitor, said that she had admired hydrangea seas in Tokyo, Japan, where they are called “ajisai” and often bloom during the rainy season. She never expected to see so many large hydrangeas in Yangmingshan, Taipei, and was delighted to be able to take some home as souvenirs.

The gardeners growing hydrangeas also noted that the flower is very water-needy. After taking them home, travelers should spray them with water twice a day and keep an eye on the water level in the vase to maintain the flowers’ freshness and extend their vase life.

Public transport info: Travelers can take bus lines Xiao 8 or Xiao 9 and get off at the “Zhuzihu (Hutian Elementary School)” stop, where the Shuiche Liao Trail will be visible.
