First Japan flights uncertain? Taiwan’s Tigerair and V Air may launch in Southeast Asia first

The establishment of two local low-cost carriers, “Tigerair Taiwan” and “V Air,” has generated great anticipation among many Taiwanese backpackers, and the market is buzzing with speculation about which route will be launched first. A survey conducted by ETtoday EVA Air Travel Cloud found that “Tokyo” was the most anticipated destination among netizens. However, many fans might be disappointed—both domestic low-cost airlines are likely to launch their maiden flights in Southeast Asia.

Tigerair Taiwan had originally planned to make Macau its first destination, but later, during a press conference, Tigerair Taiwan’s first CEO, Kuan Hsu, indicated that the inaugural route would likely be to a destination in Southeast Asia. As for V Air, the airline has kept its initial routes under wraps since its launch. In late April, there were market rumors that Osaka would be the first destination, but due to Japan’s lengthy application procedures, senior executives at V Air revealed that Southeast Asian cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Sabah (excluding Bangkok) are possible choices. However, they have not given up on the Japan route and will continue discussions with relevant Japanese authorities to see if a Japan route can be launched within this year.
