The long-awaited Wood Pot has reopened this September. As soon as we heard the news, we made time to visit last month. The new location at No. 68-1, Tianshu North Road, isn’t too far from the old spot. The interior decoration style remains true to the original, and this low-key comeback delivers the same delightful layered flavors.

We thought arriving after 2 PM on a weekday would help us avoid the lunch rush, but the place was still packed when we got there. Luckily, we managed to snag a table for two. At first, the Marshall speakers couldn’t really shine due to the noisy crowd, making the atmosphere a bit overwhelming. However, by around 4 PM, when only a few tables remained occupied, the vibe became much more enjoyable.

We noticed some fun figurines and creative touches on the wooden tables. Though the new shop feels slightly more commercial than expected, the overall ambiance is still quite appealing. The space is compact, with some seating areas a bit close together, accommodating about 40 guests at maximum capacity.

Aside from salads, Wood Pot’s current menu offers five noodle dishes and three rice dishes, all of which can be upgraded to a set meal. For an additional $130, you can opt for Set A (includes soup, bread, and a drink—choose one from black tea, mint tea, foam, or black coffee), or for $180, Set B (includes a drink—any non-alcoholic beverage—and a cake). We also appreciate that Wood Pot serves water infused with fresh lime, which we prefer over lemon for its sweet, fragrant taste.

The soup served with the set meal changes daily. On the day of our visit, it was a special grilled corn and fish soup—rich, aromatic, and full of flavor. The accompanying bread had a pleasant chewiness, and when drizzled with the homemade sweet caramel sauce, it made me even more excited for the rest of the meal.

Due to photo-taking, our noodles had cooled slightly, but they were still Q-textured and coated in a well-balanced sauce—not overly thick or heavy. The flavors had layers and aromas, the shrimp was plump and springy, while the sesame leaf greens had a slightly spicy, bitter edge.

The Japanese-style purple rice was soft and chewy, mixed with a variety of ingredients like sweet potato, pumpkin, almonds, celery, grapes, and apples. About seven or eight slices of filet mignon, with a sweet-salty flavor, were rich and chewy. However, since we took a bit longer to take photos, the meat felt slightly dry—but still within an acceptable range. Though the overall flavor profile was bold, we really enjoyed the taste of each ingredient in the iron pot.

The coffee had a slightly stronger bitter note, which we didn’t particularly enjoy, but it came with milk and sugar cubes that you could adjust to your taste.

In addition to à la carte options, Wood Pot also offers an afternoon tea set for $260 (cake + any drink of your choice). The cake was moist and slightly chewy, and pairing it with whipped cream added extra aroma. Compared to the impressive savory dishes, the cake was more average in taste.
