To promote tourism, East Japan Railway Company (JR East Japan) will launch an ultra-luxurious sleeper train with a mezzanine room design in spring 2017, and its full interior decoration has been unveiled for the first time recently.
With gold as the main design theme, JR East Japan’s luxury sleeper train consists of 10 carriages and can accommodate a maximum of only 34 passengers per trip. The first and last carriages are designed as observation cars, where large floor-to-ceiling windows allow passengers to watch the scenery rush by, creating an open space that makes travelers feel like they are exploring the mountains and forests.

Carriages 2, 3, 4, 8, and 9 offer a total of 15 guest rooms, each a luxurious double room, also predominantly gold in color. To accommodate elderly or passengers with physical or mental disabilities, each room is designed as barrier-free, allowing guests to fully relax in the spacious accommodations.
Carriage 5 offers two specially designated luxury rooms, the most unique of which features a mezzanine design. The modern-style room incorporates traditional Japanese aesthetics, allowing passengers to enjoy the scenery from the second-floor living area while savoring rare moments of leisure. Carriages 6 and 7 are the dining and bar areas respectively, with all meals prepared using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Additionally, the boarding and alighting entrance is located in Carriage 7.
This 5-billion-yen luxury train will travel through the Tohoku and Koshinetsu regions of eastern Japan in the future, and is expected to offer irregular 3- to 4-day travel packages.
