Century-old Shimen stone-terraced fields blooming with cosmos flowers are breathtakingly beautiful

The Shimen Songshan Terraced Fields are built using volcanic rocks from Yangmingshan and are the only stone terraced fields in Taiwan, boasting a history of over 100 years. From the “Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage” spot along the Tudi Gongling Trail, visitors can take in the entire view of the Songshan Terraced Fields. From now until the end of June, the cosmos flowers planted in the terraces are in full bloom—a perfect time for tourists to visit and enjoy the scenery.

Under the guidance of the Agriculture Bureau’s “Revitalization and Greening of Dilapidated Terraced Fields” policy, in addition to cosmos flowers, the Shimen Terraced Fields have also restored diverse wildlife such as tiger frogs and pond frogs, enriching the natural ecology. Coupled with subsidies for local equipment such as rice mills and vacuum packers, the area’s specialty—Qiansui Rice—maintains stable production. Visitors can not only admire the flowers but also purchase Qiansui Rice to take home. Chen Guozhi, the general manager of the Shimen Community, mentioned that during weekends, visitors can also sign up for DIY experiences making rice noodles and grass cakes.

Attractions around the Shimen Songshan Community include Qing Shan Waterfall, Jian Shan Lake Trail, and Tudi Gongling Trail, which leads to the forested area of Yangmingshan National Park.
