Mona Lisa’s Chonky Cat? UK’s ‘Chonky Cat Art Exhibition’ Transforms Masterpieces into Adorably Healing Art

Imagine what it would look like if cute, lazy, and chubby cats photobombed world-famous paintings like the Mona Lisa, The Creation of Adam, or The Birth of Venus? Russian artist Vitaly Petrova became an overnight sensation after blending her beloved cat into iconic artworks, creating “chonky cat art” that has cat lovers everywhere completely smitten—and she’s now bringing her solo exhibition to the UK.

Petrova, who hadn’t created anything for over two years after falling into a deep depression following her mother’s death, began painting again at a friend’s suggestion—this time centering her work around her mother’s favorite cat, a yellow fluffball named Charatas who loved sprawling and posing. After taking numerous photos of Charatas, Petrova composited them into various classic masterpieces. The results were so amusing that everyone from gallery owners to fellow artists loved them, and once the images were posted online, they quickly went viral, propelling Petrova to fame.

When explaining her creative process, Petrova revealed that she used high-definition digital technology to replicate the original paintings before integrating photos of Charatas into them, and then recreating the composite on traditional canvas using the same colors, dimensions, and proportions. The result is so realistic that without Charatas, many people would never guess it’s a copy. Petrova said this method not only offers a fresh take on artistic expression, but also serves as a tribute to her late mother.

Now, her solo exhibition“From ICON to I-CATS”is open from now until July 5th at Stonehill House in Oxfordshire, UK. While most of the works feature classic pieces by various Russian painters, visitors traveling to Oxford—whether to tour the University of Oxford or visit film locations from the Harry Potter series—might want to check out this delightfully unique ‘chonky cat art.’
