Changhua’s 50-Year-Old Super Popular Ice Shop – Traditional Handmade Eight-Treasure Ice

On a hot summer day, nothing beats a bowl of ice. Changhua has many famous ice shops, and previously we often visited “Little Wooden House” and “Changhua Papaya Milk King.” This time, we’re trying something different. This “Shuili Ice House” is actually another super popular ice shop. Not only has it been in business for 50 years, but it was also featured on “Foodie Show!”

“Shuili Ice House” is located at the corner of Zhongshan Road and Yong’an Street in Changhua. If you’re coming from Zhongshan Road, watch out for traffic—you can park right at the entrance and enjoy your ice while keeping an eye on your car. But when it’s hot, crowds pour in, so it’s better to find a proper parking spot. There’s also a large parking lot about 200 meters ahead.

We visited in winter, and it was a weekday, so the seats under the arcade weren’t open yet. However, there were already a few tables of customers inside.

The ingredients in the refrigerated display case are clearly visible, and they use fresh milk from Zhu’En Ranch, which makes you feel reassured about what you’re eating.

You can choose from juices or shaved ice options, with a huge variety of flavors—it always takes us ages to decide what to order each time.

You can refer to the MENU, but once you’re there, you’ll probably be as overwhelmed as I was before even tasting the ice. Besides the pre-designed ice treats, you can also customize your own or add extra toppings (for an additional charge, of course!) if you feel you need more.

After ordering, the counter will call your number when your order is ready. With an empty table in front of you, it can feel a bit anticlimactic—some people just can’t wait and go ask… “Is it ready yet?” (That was me…)

They also have snow cotton ice if you want something different. It’s really good without stirring. Portions are generous enough for 1–2 people to share. To try more flavors, it’s common to see groups of students or office workers teaming up to order together.

Eight-Treasure Ice – NT$55Made with eight traditional handmade fillings (barley, red beans, green beans, taro, sweet potato balls, pineapple, Q balls, and soybeans)… plus shaved ice. Great value for money—each bite offers a different texture. You can also swap the shaved ice for snow cotton ice, but that costs extra.

This bowl was ordered by a friend who came along. I remember her saying the taro was really tasty.

Fresh Strawberry Milk Ice – NT$120A seasonal fruit ice treat. I’m someone who loses control at the sight of strawberries, and it being strawberry season, how could I miss it? The shop makes its own syrup, jam, adds fresh strawberries and shaved ice—the taste is slightly tangy and sweet.

But at NT$150, the portion of strawberries isn’t very big, so it feels a bit unsatisfying. The value for money on the strawberry ice doesn’t seem that great.

This bowl was ordered by a couple at the next table—they also got strawberry ice but added pudding. That bowl was only NT$80. Why did ours have fewer toppings but cost more???

“Shuili Ice House” is also one of Changhua’s well-known old shops. Fortunately, it’s not some hidden gem tucked away in an alley—you can find it right on the main road… just look for the big “Papaya Milk” sign. When you’re in Changhua, it’s a great new option for ice treats.
