Good news for cyclists: Taipei MRT adds three more stations for weekend bike rides

Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation announced that starting June 28, three additional stations on the Tamsui Line—Jiantan Station, Shiba Station, and National Taiwan University Hospital Station—will allow passengers to bring bicycles on board during weekends, giving commuters more station options.

Currently, among all Taipei MRT stations, all 24 stations on the Wenhu Line, as well as three high-capacity transfer stations—Da’an Station, Zhongxiao Fuxing Station, and Nangang Exhibition Center Station—and Tamsui Station and Taipei Main Station remain closed to bikes. All other stations now allow bicycles to be brought on board during weekends. According to statistics, the number of passengers bringing bicycles on the MRT during weekends has been increasing year by year, with over 94,000 trips in 2013 and more than 50,000 trips from January to May this year.

Passengers bringing bicycles on the MRT are charged a combined fare for themselves and the bike. Regardless of distance, the fee is NT$80 per trip. Those who fail to enter or transfer at designated stations in accordance with the rules may be fined between NT$1,500 and NT$7,500.
