In Mexico’s pitch-black concrete caves, travelers have been visiting in recent years to endure unbearable high temperatures. This is the world of the "Temazcal." The word "Temazcal" dates back to the Mayan civilization and refers to entering a small stone-domed steam hut, sweating in a space filled with herbs—much like what we now call a sauna. The difference is that monks chant alongside, and for the Mayan civilization, this is a sacred ritual.
Throughout the two-hour process, you’ll hear the monks continuously chanting, accompanied by a thick, peculiar aroma of herbs. Typically, one monk conducts the tradition for a small group of people, and that monk is a member of a nearby Mayan community.

During the process, the monk pours water over a pile of hot stones in the center of the floor, releasing steam that carries a blend of aromas such as rosemary, basil, and mint, filling the entire space.
However, those with diabetes or heart conditions cannot participate, and others who suffer from claustrophobia or are prone to doubt or discomfort should think twice. Nevertheless, most travelers can still relax inside and emerge feeling refreshed, energized, and perhaps even a little lighter.
Visitors can drink herbal tea to stay hydrated, and you’re free to lie down, walk around, or sit as you wish in the steam hut—whatever helps cleanse your body and mind.
