World War I Centenary: London Landmarks Including Tower Bridge to Go Dark for One Hour

The brutality of World War I left a deep scar in history. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the war this year, the UK has decided to hold a "Lights Out" event on August 4. Major landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, and the National Theatre will turn off their lights for one hour.

In August 1914, nearly every country in the world was engulfed in war, and the UK officially declared war on Germany at that time. To remember that turbulent period of history, from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM on August 4, major landmarks across the UK—including the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, the National Theatre, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the National Gallery, and the National Portrait Gallery—will turn off their lights for one hour. Starting at 10:00 PM, a candlelight prayer service will be held inside Westminster Abbey, with only one light remaining, along with commemorative activities such as readings and musical performances.

In addition, British embassies and Commonwealth representative offices around the world will also participate in this event. They will take photos of the single candle left burning in their buildings and post them on Twitter, spreading this commemorative message digitally across the globe.
