High-altitude rock climbing and laser tag—Liuying Infantry Experience Camp brings you close to military life

Still thinking of Kinmen’s open military tourist sites as places where you can only “quietly observe”? Starting in June, the revamped Liuying Infantry Military Experience Park offers a refreshing new experience. Located on the hillside of Shangyi Village, Jinhu Township, even before reaching the Liuying Infantry Camp area, visitors are greeted by various types of “cannons” familiar to soldiers, shrouded in a somewhat mysterious aura among the trees. Once the most important camp in the Kinmen region, the “Shangyi Engineer Battalion” supplied all construction materials needed by the Kinmen forces, including granite, cement, and stone materials. As cross-strait tensions eased and the military uniform came off, the vast campgrounds and empty bunkers feel rather lonely.

As Kinmen transitions from a war zone to a top tourist destination, Kinmen County Government has designated this engineer battalion as the ideal place for “military experience.” Mr. Yin, administrator of Liuying Infantry Military Experience Park, said that visitors can directly experience military activities here, such as the high-altitude “outdoor climbing,” which challenges one’s limits. He said, “Stepping out of your comfort zone and walking at heights brings fear, but it’s also a way to test your courage.” Even new recruits at Chengkungling still undergo this training today.

The Liuying Infantry Military Experience isn’t limited to just a few meters off the ground—it also includes a “laser tag zone.” Using air and laser technology, this shooting facility allows team competitions and is suitable for students and families alike. The “laser maze” is perfect for parent-child fun, where infrared lasers form a maze; touching any beam triggers an alarm, creating pressure for players—usually experienced by dads and moms bringing their kids.
More fresh and thrilling experiences at Liuying Infantry Military Camp will gradually be introduced, including “shooting simulation,” “paintball games,” and “live firing experiences.” Mr. Yin suggests visitors first consult the visitor center for suitable experiences. He further noted that Kinmen’s future military sites will focus on interactive experiences and will be gradually opened, with different camps developing unique features—a policy by Kinmen County Government to revitalize and repurpose military heritage.
