Southern runway at Taoyuan Airport to feature dual-level gates for A380’s first passenger landing in Taiwan next year

The southern runway at Taoyuan Airport has been temporarily closed for renovation since the beginning of this year to enhance its functionality, with completion expected by the end of the year. Fei Hongjun, General Manager of Taoyuan International Airport Corporation, stated that as the massive A380 aircraft will make its first passenger flight to Taiwan next year, two locations at the airport will be redesigned as dual-level boarding gates, set to open in March next year.

The A380 is currently the world’s largest passenger aircraft, with a total capacity of over 500 people. Airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Korean Air, and Asiana Airlines all offer A380 passenger services. However, although the aircraft was showcased in Taiwan back in 2007, it has never made a passenger landing at Taoyuan Airport. Therefore, next year will mark the first time a foreign airline operates a passenger flight to Taiwan using the A380.

Emirates, which currently operates the world’s largest A380 fleet, indicated when it launched flights to Taiwan in April this year that it would consider using the A380 for Taiwan routes after the Taoyuan Airport runway renovation, depending on the actual situation. It is also understood that Korean Air has shown considerable interest in being the first to use the dual-level boarding gates and air bridges at Taoyuan Airport for the A380.
