You might wonder why Queen’s Bath isn’t featured in some well-known travel guides. The truth is, some have requested that this site be kept hidden becauseQueen’s Bath is a sinkhole surrounded by volcanic rock. When tides change, the ocean becomes turbulent, and without warning, powerful waves can crash into the cave. One moment you’re happily playing in the water, the next a massive wave smashes down on you.

In November 2013, 11 tourists tragically drowned at Queen’s Bath—some were even swept out to sea. This led local authorities to consider showing travel safety videos on flights to Hawaii, advising visitors to avoid hazardous areas on the island, including Queen’s Bath. However, the effort had little effect. Despite the warnings, tourists continue to visit, with over 5,000 people having tagged themselves there on Instagram alone. Another famous but dangerous site, Haiku Stairs, features nearly 4,000 steep steps and has been deemed off-limits due to its extreme danger, yet many people still climb it every day.

Hawaii isn’t an inherently dangerous or deadly destination. On the contrary, it’s an incredibly beautiful place—provided you follow all the rules.
