Opened in 2013, "Wuman" originally started as a homestay. However, the owner wanted to offer travelers a more complete and home-like experience. With the owner’s mother being an excellent cook, they decided to set up a dining area in April this year. From neighbors in the nearby residential area to travelers visiting Tainan from afar, everyone can enjoy meals that taste like they’re cooked at home. The name "Wuman," concise and blending Japanese influence, seemed to carry deeper meaning, so I asked the owner about it. The owner explained that "Wuman" was initially meant to encourage guests to do everything slowly—eat slowly, walk slowly, and enjoy time in Tainan at a leisurely pace. Later, they realized the name sounded like the Japanese word うまい (u ma i), which means "delicious." A series of coincidences led them to incorporate this into the design of their exclusive logo as well.

With a background in design, the owner aimed to provide the best quality while maintaining the warmth of "home." Almost everything in the homestay and the meals at the dining area is personally handled by them. Located in the residential area near Minde Junior High School, just turn into the alley to spot the small sign made by the owner—no larger than an A3 sheet, it’s not overly obtrusive yet eye-catching and easy to find among the row of townhouses. As you step into Wuman, you’re greeted by lush greenery, with vibrant passion fruit leaves covering the arbor hand-built by the owner. Even under the scorching sun, sitting here feels like being shaded by a natural umbrella. The ripe passion fruits that fall off are used as organic ingredients in the食堂’s dishes, ensuring guests eat with peace of mind.

Upon entering, the indoor space is already air-conditioned, offering a comfortable environment after stepping in from the heat outside. The first floor is the main dining area, serving as both the食堂 restaurant and breakfast spot for overnight guests. There aren’t many seats, as the owner hopes to provide the highest quality possible with limited staff.

White walls are adorned with photography works by the owner as decoration. The clock on the wall deliberately only shows four digits, encouraging guests to slow down, not worry about exact timings or rushing through their schedule, but to simply relax here.

Fresh Oyster Meal Set $330
This set also comes with a complimentary drink. Highly recommended by the owner, I ordered this home-style dish that the owner often eats at home. The owner said these oysters are carefully selected daily from Anping to maintain quality. Once served, it lived up to expectations—the oysters were incredibly plump and generous in portion, enough to go with several bowls of rice.

When ordering, they ask in advance about spice preference and adjust the level of spiciness accordingly. The benefit of running a small-scale operation is the ability to customize, ensuring every guest enjoys a meal they’re satisfied with. The owner’s mother learned cooking skills from her grandmother in childhood. Over decades, she has preserved traditional techniques and precious memories through flavor.

Oysters of this size—you’d only find these by the seaside or at seafood shops~~~~

Boge personally prefers stronger flavors, and to me, the side dishes were relatively light and refreshing. The broccoli was first blanched and then stir-fried with sakura shrimp, resulting in a tender texture without any bitterness.

This Golden Sand Pumpkin dish really opened Boge’s eyes—the combination of salted egg yolk and pumpkin was something I’d never seen before, and it tasted surprisingly good too!!

Burdock strips

To celebrate the opening, there are small activities for checking in and liking their page. On the day, they gave away a homemade pudding.

After eating and drinking my fill, since there were no guests staying that day, with the owner’s permission, I went upstairs to take a look at the homestay’s environment and snapped a few photos for reference.

There are two floors in total, with three rooms—one master suite and two standard rooms.

The style of Wuman Homestay is rather elegant and simple, aiming to give guests a feeling of returning "home." Lavish rooms might help people escape reality and seek excitement, but a place with warmth and character is sometimes a matter of fate.

If I were to describe Wuman, I’d say: it lives up to its name. And the character "慢" (slow) is no longer just an adjective—it’s a verb. Here, "I" seem to be a magic wand; anyone or anything I touch becomes connected and slows down...
