The Moomin-themed Restaurant Officially Opens on July 7th – Get a Plush Toy to Take Home with Your Pancake Set

The “Moomin Café,” a Moomin-themed restaurant that’s hugely popular among girls in Japan, is finally opening its Taiwan branch on July 7th. The entire space is designed with a Nordic theme, and a giant Moomin plush toy welcomes guests at the door. Inside, you’ll also find large plush versions of 10 characters from Moomin Valley. During mealtimes, staff will take turns seating guests in a dynamic “running” service style. The highlight of the menu is the iconic Moomin House pancake, which comes with eight ceramic figurines on the plate — diners can choose one to take home after eating.

The Moomin Café is designed based on the original story of the Moomin house, aiming to make guests feel as if they’ve stepped into the Moomin universe. Like the Japanese branches, most seating is for four people, mainly so fans can enjoy meals together with Moomin. In addition to the main character Moomin, other members include Moominpappa, Moominmamma, Little My, Snufkin, the Snork Maiden, the Hemulen, the Fillyjonk, and the Mymble, plus a Taiwan-exclusive character, Groke.

For food, the menu mainly offers three categories: pasta, rice dishes, and desserts. The star item is the Moomin House pancake — a seven-layer handmade pancake served with three sweet treats shaped like the Moomin house. Most notably, there’s a row of Moomin Family ceramic figurines, including Moominpappa, Moominmamma, Little My, Snufkin, the Snork Maiden, the Fillyjonk, and the Taiwan-exclusive Groke. After your meal, you can choose one to take home. Additionally, the Mixed Berry Hokkaido Ice Cream (NT$180) comes in a ceramic mug, and after you finish it, the restaurant staff will prepare a new mug for you to take home.

Additionally, the restaurant recommends the Moomin Family risotto and the Nordic set meal. The Moomin Family risotto lets you choose either a Moomin or Snufkin-shaped white rice, with sauce options including chicken curry or mushroom beef. The Nordic set meal features dishes from Moomin’s homeland, including special grilled meatballs, smoked salmon, and traditional Nordic-style baked goods. For drinks, the special lattes and au lait series come with cute cocoa powder silhouettes.

In addition to the restaurant, a variety of Moomin merchandise is available for purchase, including tableware, cups, handkerchiefs, towels, plush toys, and more. There are also Taiwan-exclusive T-shirts and tote bags. To celebrate the opening, Moomin Café has prepared small gifts for purchases over NT$1,000 — whether you’re dining or shopping, a single purchase of NT$1,000 or more gets you an “Opening Ceremony Commemorative Badge” (purchases and dining are calculated separately, limited to 2,000 badges while supplies last).
