A Century-Old House in Pingtung Transformed into a Youth Hostel, Bringing South American Tents Indoors

In Hengchun Town, Pingtung, I came across a house built in 1918. A group of young people have moved in and redesigned this former credit cooperative into a space that includes a café, a bar, and a hostel. Especially on the second floor and above, it feels like stepping into a South American-style tent sleeping area — truly redefining the conventional hostel experience.

Sitting in the space halfway up to the third floor, I looked down to see a series of tents with a distinctly South American flair set up indoors. This isn’t a camping site or a wilderness survival camp. Wang Zhongqiao, one of the shareholders and a designer, along with his partners, reimagined the concept of youth hostels. By combining tents with sleeping quarters, they’ve created an indoor camping experience full of design flair.
