When compiling a food list of must-tries in Vietnam, “French bread” is definitely on the menu. It can be found in alleys and streets across the country, but where can you find the best one? The answer lies in this 28-year-old bakery in Hội An. Even celebrity Helen Thanh Đào highly recommends it, saying, “This shop was once voted the best French bakery in all of Vietnam — every Vietnamese knows about it.”

Locatedin Hội An, this bakery named “Phượng (Phượng)” is not only a long-standing shop, but also a place visited by famous American chef Anthony Michael Bourdain when he came to Vietnam for a TV show. Its fame draws around 2,000 customers a day.As for what makes this shop so special, the owner explained that the bread, ingredients, and seasonings are all handmade, and the techniques were even personally developed by her father back in the day.

Locals say: “Phượng Bakery offers at least 20 different toppings, and you can freely mix and match any fillings. The owner calculates a fair price after you’ve chosen your ingredients. The outer French bread is fragrant and has just the right chewiness, especially the minced meat inside — it’s incredibly delicious.” The owner deftly spreads butter and foie gras, then adds various vegetables, melons, meat slices, or minced meat according to customer preferences, finishing it off with lard and scallions. For just about 20,000 to 25,000 Vietnamese dong (approximately NT$30–40), you can enjoy the most delicious French bread in all of Vietnam.
