Arrive at the market by 7 AM for a refreshing treat – Longquan Ice Shop in Madou serves up vintage flavors with 70 years of history

At 7 AM in June, the sun in southern Taiwan is already blazing fiercely, and the heat continues to build, roasting the Central Market in Madou, Tainan. We weave through fresh produce spread out on canvas tarps directly on the ground, pass by scooters parked haphazardly among the vegetable stalls, and brush shoulders with shoppers and delivery people, arriving at “Longquan Ice Shop,” which has been operating in the market for 70 years. Several cast iron pots set up along the walkways of the market are boiling away with ice toppings like “red beans,” “green beans,” and “vermicelli.” Even in the early morning hours, the bustling ice shop has already heated up to a sweltering 36 degrees.
