The flagship store of Sato Yosuke revives the Taiwan market for Inaniwa udon noodles

Sato Yosuke, a renowned Japanese Inaniwa udon noodle shop, had previously entered the Taiwanese market a few years ago through an agent under the name Inaniwa Yosuke, but the store closed in 2016. Now, the original Japanese Sato Yosuke is making a comeback to Taiwan—not through an agent, but as a direct operation. According to the official Facebook page, the Taiwanese branch of Sato Yosuke will be the brand’s first overseas directly operated store, set to open on July 18.

The three major types of udon noodles in Japan are Sanuki udon from Kagawa Prefecture, Mizusawa udon from Gunma Prefecture, and Inaniwa udon from Akita Prefecture. Taiwanese people are more familiar with Sanuki udon, while the other two are relatively unknown. Inaniwa udon from Akita has a history of over 350 years and was once served as a special dish for the daimyo (feudal lord) family before gaining broader recognition during the Meiji era.
