Eggs 'n Things from Hawaii opened its first store in Japan right in Harajuku, the battleground of pancakes. Nearby, there’s also a bills I’ve been dying to try out. Currently, the most popular pancake specialty shops in Tokyo are none other than Eggs 'n Things and bills. It’s said that the Eggs 'n Things in Harajuku has long lines every day. Recently, Eggs 'n Things has gradually expanded beyond Tokyo, opening a new branch in Kyoto this April.

Thinking that such a popular restaurant was best visited early to avoid the queue, we arrived around 11:00 a.m. and only waited about five minutes before being seated. By the time we left after our meal, there was already a long line outside. Kyoto’s Eggs 'n Things has two floors with about 63 seats, and the location is quite convenient, near Shijo-Karasuma.

Beverage Menu

Three types of syrup are placed on the table: from left to right, maple, coconut, and guava. When you’re feeling sick of pancakes and on the verge of despair, these three bottles play a very important role.

Forgot which drink it was, but I remember it was a female staff-recommended bestseller—tasted like a mixed berry smoothie.

Since we were here, we had to order the ever-popular classic: Strawberry Whip Cream w/Nuts for 1100 yen.

The moment I took photos, the mountain of whipped cream was almost ready to collapse (?)...

Layered pancakes topped with the shop’s signature fresh cream and sprinkled with macadamia nuts. This strawberry whipped cream pancake—the strawberries tasted like pickled ones, not fresh, which was a bit disappointing. But it’s also hard to find fresh and sweet strawberries at this time of year. At first, dipping it in the fresh cream and eating it with the pancake was quite delicious. The special fresh cream tasted sweet without being greasy, and I even wore a happy expression while eating. However, the portion was just too large—I had no idea that by the end, my mood completely shifted. Within half an hour, I went from heaven to hell, and in the end, I had to rely on the three syrups on the table to balance the flavors just to finish it...
It’s not that the pancake wasn’t tasty, it’s just that I’d already developed a trauma around whipped cream... Back in the day, after eating harbs’ signature fruit mille-feuille, I ended up throwing up in the restroom shortly after. This time, I have no idea where I got the courage to order a whole whipped cream pancake by myself.

Banana Whip Cream w/Nuts 1100yen
Similar to the strawberry pancake, except the strawberries were replaced with bananas. I strongly suggest—if you’re not obsessed with whipped cream—please do not order one for yourself. Go with at least two people. After finishing the whole pancake, I felt dizzy, nauseous, and unsteady on my feet—it was kind of like morning sickness (?) symptoms. It got so bad that halfway through browsing a bookstore, I had to run to the restroom with my mouth puckered to avoid disaster. After this meal, I probably won’t touch whipped cream again for a while.
