Japan's Autumn Maple f Dragon Trail: Admire Crimson Leaves in the Deep-V Gorge & Poetic Gassho Village

The journey along the "Great Way" unveils breathtaking maple views! Japan's Hokuriku • Central region "f Dragon Trail" combines stunning mountain scenery with natural history, blending the rhythm of modern cities with the Zen charm of ancient towns. Visiting in autumn allows you to fully immerse yourself in the area's unique landscapes.

Toyama Prefecture's Kurobe Gorge is one of Hokuriku's most popular attractions, boasting Japan's deepest V-shaped canyon. Designated as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, adventurers love riding the Kurobe Gorge Railway from Unazuki Station to Kurobe Dam Station. The 80-minute journey offers stunning views of streams, valleys, forests, plants, lakes, and snow-capped peaks. The autumn foliage from mid-October to mid-November is particularly magnificent, with poetic red leaves that captivate the senses.

The beauty of Tateyama Kurobe isn't limited to this—travelers can easily explore the Tateyama Mountain Range via buses and cable cars. The cable car ride from Oku-Hotaka to Kurobe Dam is especially spectacular, offering an aerial view of the grand Tateyama Kurobe landscape. The continuous mountain ranges stretch as far as the eye can see, with layers of crimson leaves painting the mountains with the colors of the season, creating a 3D autumn masterpiece.

Nearby Kamikochi, nestled among the Hotaka, Yake, and Chōnen mountain ranges, is a small basin at an elevation of about 1,500 meters. Made famous in the 19th century by British missionary and mountaineer Walter Weston, it remains a favorite among hikers and a top tourist destination.

The Azusa River, which flows through Kamikochi, never stops its gentle babble, carrying messages from upstream. The iconic 36.6-meter Kappa Bridge over the Azusa River is also an excellent spot for sightseeing. In autumn, standing on Kappa Bridge, you'll see the towering Hotaka Range ahead and, in the distance, the faint white smoke of Mount Yake to the south, accompanied by gradient-like autumn leaves—a rich visual feast.

When visiting Hokuriku, how can you miss the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gassho Village? Shirakawa-go Gassho Village is the largest gassho settlement in Hokuriku, located in a heavy-snowfall region. Its thatched-roof houses, shaped like praying hands, have steep slopes to prevent snow accumulation—an architectural marvel adapted to nature. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go in autumn offers breathtaking village views from elevated spots and a chance to experience the joy of local harvests, making it an unforgettable part of your journey.

Beyond the warm hues of autumn leaves, the most colorful spot in Hokuriku is Toyama Prefecture's Tonami Shikisai no Oka (Seasonal Flower Park)! Located east of Tonami Park, this greenhouse garden blooms with flowers year-round. With its diverse and vibrant blooms, flower enthusiasts will fall in love with this floral wonderland.

The greenhouse exterior is made of glass and designed to resemble a Turkish town—home of the tulip—with houses, streets, and squares. Inside, the park showcases the history and culture of tulips, detailing their journey from Central Asia through Turkey to the Netherlands and then to Japan, adding an intellectual touch to your Hokuriku autumn adventure.
