Traditional buns and steamed buns were once great choices for breakfast or afternoon tea in the old days, but in recent years they’ve evolved into adorable forms that even young people find perfectly acceptable to hold in their hands. A popular local bun shop in Kenting has won over hearts with its colorfully designed rose steamed buns – and you might miss out if you don’t head out early!
Kenting’s Xiao Du Buns specializes in traditional military dependents’ village–style buns, and it’s definitely one of the must-try foods in Kenting. In addition to classic flavors like pork buns and bamboo shoot buns, it also offers varieties favored by younger customers, such as matcha steamed buns and rose steamed buns, with each bun priced around NT$25 to NT$40.

Each rose steamed bun costs NT$30, and the color scheme varies with each one. They are primarily made up of six colors: red from red cabbage, yellow from carrots, purple from purple sweet potato, green from matcha, brown from chocolate, and beige from pumpkin. About the size of a palm, these colorful and cute buns are especially adorable to hold.
Xiao Du Buns was created by the owner, who spent a lot of time perfecting the taste of the handmade buns his father used to make in his childhood. Aside from 11 flavors of steamed buns including rose and matcha, the shop also offers buns that carry the taste of home, such as onion BBQ pork buns, egg yolk mushroom pork buns, spicy lion’s head meatballs buns, bacon sausage buns, big pork buns, seaweed shredded pork buns, spicy bamboo shoot buns, vegetarian cheese buns, vegetarian curry vegetable buns, and more – there’s something for everyone, no matter your preference.
