Once hailed by former U.S. President George H.W. Bush as "the best French toast I’ve ever had in my life!" — you can imagine just how exceptional this toast is. Now, Taiwan can also enjoy President Bush’s favorite French toast, thanks to Japanese Western cuisine chef Yoshiro Yamaguchi, who personally

It is reported that during his visit to Japan, former U.S. President George H. W. Bush stayed at the Okura Tokyo. While at the hotel, he ordered a French toast, and after tasting it, he was so impressed that he described it as "the best French toast I've ever had." As a result, the "President's French Toast" at the Okura Tokyo became an instant hit and a legendary limited-edition dessert at the hotel.

Yoshiro Yamaguchi, the Western cuisine chef at the European-style wing of The Okura Prestige Taipei, who was recently transferred directly from Tokyo in September, explained that according to the passed-down secret recipe, the toast needs to be soaked in a handmade egg mixture the day before. The ratio of milk to eggs is also fixed. Afterwards, it is slowly pan-fried over low heat, where controlling the heat and timing must be just right. All eight sides must be fried to a golden color before being placed in the oven until the toast becomes fluffy. Chef Yamaguchi said, "All three steps are very important. Not only does the soaking time need to be 24 hours, but when it’s taken out of the pan, you also have to pay attention to the color changes of the toast. When putting it in the oven, you must carefully adjust the temperature and timing. Small factors can affect the color of the toast and also its taste."

The freshly baked "President's French Toast" has a golden, slightly caramelized hue that is highly enticing. With one bite, the texture is very similar to tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet), but in the mouth, it delivers the fragrant aroma of egg crepes along with a subtle milky flavor. It is refreshing, soft, and fluffy, with a "layered" taste. No wonder former President Bush said this French toast from Tokyo is "the best toast." Currently, the French evening set menu at the European-style wing of The Okura Prestige Taipei, priced at NT$3,800 + 10%, includes the President's French Toast as a dessert. It can also be ordered individually for NT$360 + 10% at the Pearl Bar on the first floor.
