Free neighborhood tour guide experience in Taipei’s “Qingtian 76” – uncover the stories of this historic home

Located in the lanes of Taipei’s Qingtian Street, “Qingtian 76” stands out with its 80-year-old unique Japanese-style house, free guided tours, and tasty food, offering a peaceful, nostalgic contrast to the city’s hustle and bustle — drawing many to explore and revisit.

“Qingtian 76” gets its name from its address at No. 6, Lane 7, Qingtian Street. It was built during the Japanese colonial period by Professor Adachi Hitoshi and was part of a collective residential development for university professors. Covering a total area of 206 pyeong, it was completed in 1931. In 1945, it became the residence of Ma Tingying, a renowned geology professor at National Taiwan University. In 2006, it was officially designated as a municipal historical site under the name “Japanese-Style Dormitory of National Taiwan University – Former Residence of Ma Tingying.”

In addition to its rich cultural assets that allow visitors to explore history, “Qingtian 76” also holds free guided tours on a monthly basis. The schedule for the following month is announced mid-month, and the public can sign up. As Taiwan’s first scientific celebrity heritage site, geological education promotion is also a key focus. Elementary and secondary school groups can book popular science lectures two weeks in advance, all free of charge.

Beyond regular free tours and science activities, “Qingtian 76” invites celebrities to give talks every month, allowing attendees to enjoy coffee and light refreshments while listening to insightful discussions. There are also neighborhood walking tours led by cultural volunteers. Starting from Qingtian 76, these walks explore the history of the area, letting participants not only learn about the stories behind old houses but also take away tales from the streets.

After experiencing the charming ambience of the old house, Qingtian 76 also offers afternoon tea and Japanese-style set meals. All dishes are made with fresh produce and seafood, prepared to order. One of their featured drinks, “Essence of Green,” made with specially selected oriental tea, a hint of Japanese apple juice, and cold drip coffee, is a highlight of their afternoon tea menu — offering a blend of tea, apple, and coffee flavors in one sip.

Additionally, to accommodate different group sizes, Qingtian 76 provides various dining spaces by creatively using the original indoor areas of the old residence. There are private rooms available for 4 to 20 people. For those who prefer the outdoors, there are also semi-outdoor and outdoor seating areas.
