A 30-minute trip takes you to see a different side of Taipei. Hidden within the bustling urban area, Tianmu Ancient Trail, commonly known as the “Tianmu Water Supply Pipeline Trail,” was originally built to supply water to downtown Taipei. Although most of its water supply function has been taken over by the Feitsui Reservoir, the large pipes still lie quietly in place, witnessing the past. Along the trail, you can enjoy panoramic views of the valleys and terraced fields between Guandu Plain and Shamao Mountain, making it one of the popular secret nature trails.

Starting from the trailhead at Section 7 of Zhongshan North Road, as you hike up the steps, you’ll see the large black pipes winding their way uphill. Once you reach the flatter section of the path, the rich ecological environment unfolds along the way—you might even spot Formosan macaques playing in the early morning or at dusk. Before arriving at “Cui Feng Pavilion,” you’ll pass through a stretch of natural bare rock cliffs, creating an exciting yet uniquely scenic trail experience.

Though Tianmu Ancient Trail sits at an elevation of just 300 meters, it features a compressed ecosystem that includes tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate broadleaf forests—a rare and precious find. Walking along the forest path, your view shifts from overlooking Tianmu and Beitou to mountain forests and valleys, where terraced fields and wisps of smoke create a picturesque scene, making it a perfect weekend getaway to briefly escape the city noise.

Transportation:
Take the MRT and transfer to bus routes Red 19, 220, 224, 267, 535, or 601, then get off at “Tianmu Station.” Walk to the end of Lane 232, Section 7, Zhongshan North Road, to reach the trailhead.
