The clothes you wear make up only 20% of your wardrobe! Travel experts: Why you shouldn’t check in luggage when going abroad

When traveling abroad, do you bring a large piece of luggage to check in, or do you travel with just a small bag? The foreign websiteCondéNast Travelersuggests that unless you’re heading to a resource-scarce country like Africa, the time cost of waiting for your luggage at the airport — not to mention the risk of lost baggage — simply isn’t worth it.

According to Andrea Whittle, Chief Designer at California Closets, on average, people only wear about 20% of the clothes in their wardrobe. She believes the same principle applies when choosing clothes for traveling abroad — unless there’s a formal occasion, most items brought along end up unworn and simply come back as they were. Generally speaking, a 21-inch suitcase is sufficient for normal-length international business trips.

Lale Arikoglu also mentioned that during her 10-day trip to Greece, she found she hadn’t worn many of the clothes she brought. Even though she packed a pair of flashy high heels, they ended up being useless because she spent her time wandering steep hills and pebble beaches. As for not having to wait at the baggage carousel or worrying about missing the next flight while waiting for luggage, she says she’ll stick to traveling with just a carry-on bag for life.
