Exceptional value   A massive portion of cold noodles hidden in Taipei’s alleys, sold for just NT$40

On hot summer days when appetites wane, the refreshing crunch of shredded cucumber paired with rich sesame sauce on cold noodles is always appetizing and cooling — a beloved summer dish for many. In Taipei, near the Liuzhangli MRT Station, there's a small cold noodle shop called Xiaohui Cold Noodles that has been around for over 10 years. A small portion costs just NT$30, while an extra-large portion, as big as your face, is only NT$40. Regulars are mostly local residents, often buying four or five portions at a time.

In Taipei, selling a portion of cold noodles for NT$30 and a large one for NT$40 is incredibly cheap. The owner says they haven’t raised prices in years, but with rising costs recently, they moved the shop to their own residence and cut staff to save wherever possible. As for the flavor, the owner describes it as traditional military dependents’ village style, with a milder sesame sauce taste.

Besides the affordable cold noodles, the rice and soups here are also very cheap. Miso soup and egg drop soup are NT$15 per bowl, pork ball soup is NT$20, and stir-fried rice and noodles are all NT$60. There are also peace noodles and Fanghe noodles for NT$40.
