Taichung Snack Food: Fugui Ting Angelica Duck Noodle Soup

We’ve been visiting “Fugui Ting Angelica Duck Noodle Soup” quite often lately. The main reason is that after taking Little Cherry for her vaccinations at “Taichung Hospital,” it was about lunchtime. Originally, we had planned to grab a quick meal at “Hwatai Coffee,” but then we spotted “Fugui Ting” across the street. A friend had recommended it before, so we thought we’d give it a try…

“Fugui Ting Angelica Duck Noodle Soup” is a bit tricky to find. It’s located in an alley off Sanmin Road in Central District, roughly near the intersection with Minquan Road. If you’re coming from Sanmin Road, just look for the red archway — turn in there, and you’ll find it. Right across the archway is “How Thai,” but parking in the alley can be difficult. We recommend parking on Sanmin Road, Shifu Road, or Minquan Road, then walking in — it’s really not far.

The “Hwatai Coffee” across the street is actually the birthplace of Mamba Coffee, and their casual meals are pretty tasty too!

Then, right across from “Hwatai Coffee” is “Fugui Ting Angelica Duck Noodle Soup.” Its exterior may look a bit old, but that’s because it’s been in business for 60 years!

Every time we go to “Fugui Ting Angelica Duck Noodle Soup,” the place is always packed during meal hours. Sometimes, it’s even full before 12 noon. Fortunately, the turnover is fast, so even if there’s no seat, a short wait usually does the trick…

The duck heads and pig’s trotters on the shelf are almost must-orders…

Angelica Duck Noodles – NT$60. This is the signature dish. Anyone who dares to try angelica duck absolutely must have a bowl of this!

The noodles are firm and not mushy, the duck meat is tender and flavorful, and the broth is sweet and pleasant. The herbal taste isn’t overly strong or heavy…

Even our little Cherry ate it up like this… (Sorry, she had a chin injury around that time, which is why we were often at the hospital!)

Anyway… We thought Little Cherry wouldn’t dare to drink the angelica soup, but not only did she enjoy it, she even asked for a second bowl. At “Fugui Ting,” the angelica duck noodle soup comes with unlimited free refills!

Angelica Noodle Soup – NT$25. On another visit, when we ordered a full table of dishes, the owner kindly told us we had enough and didn’t need to order more. She even offered to change our angelica duck noodles to just angelica noodle soup, since we had already ordered the duck separately.

Tube Rice Cake – NT$30. The rice cake at “Fugui Ting” is a bit different from the usual clear broth version we’re used to. It uses glutinous rice, has less soy sauce color on the outside, and the aroma of the rice itself is more pronounced. The texture is on the softer side, and when paired with the savory pork lard, I found the taste quite nice and relatively refreshing…

Duck Meat – It has a slightly smoky aroma, with a slightly crispy skin. The meat is tender, salty, and flavorful — quite likable…

Braised Pig’s Trotters – Different from how my mom makes them, the sauce color is a bit lighter, but the texture is soft and chewy, and the flavor is good…

Blanched Squid – I’m not a big fan of squid, but when it’s blanched, the texture is crispier, which makes it more acceptable to me…

Chicken Gizzard + Chicken Liver – I think the chicken liver is delicious — not too dry and well-seasoned. I’m less fond of the chicken gizzard…

Rice Blood Cake – This is also quite good, with a texture that’s not powdery or mushy…

Blanched Vegetables – On different visits, we’ve had different types of blanched vegetables, probably depending on the season. Personally, I’m not a fan of having noodles on top of the blanched greens. XD

Our little Cherry absolutely loves it here, so every time we bring her, she has a great time. When the kid’s happy, mom’s happy too!

When she saw me taking photos, the owner quickly handed me a business card and asked me to make sure to take a picture of it… XD

Every time we visit “Fugui Ting Angelica Duck Noodle Soup,” we find the owners super warm and welcoming. They seem genuinely worried we’ll overeat — every time I order, they say: “How about this, it should be enough, no need to order more…” (Do I have a compulsive need to fill the whole menu?! XD)

Most famous snack shops, due to their popularity, often see a drop in service quality, but every time we go to “Fugui Ting,” we wonder: why is the service attitude so good!? This beloved Taichung alleyway snack shop has been delighting locals for 60 years and is known by many long-time residents. Even the popular show “Foodie Family” came to film here!
