Traditional Warriors' Festival Cultural and Sports Event to Kick Off in Maolin, Kaohsiung on the 25th

The Maolin District Office of Kaohsiung City has scheduled the Oponoho Wanshanli Taavala Warriors’ Festival and Traditional Culture Sports Event for the 25th. The event will run from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, featuring a series of warrior ceremonies, traditional cultural competitions, the "Music Under the Stars" night concert, and traditional totem dances. Members of all local tribes as well as visitors interested in indigenous culture are invited to join the celebration at the Wanshanli Sports Field.

The day’s events will kick off with the Wanshan Tribe’s Warrior Ceremony. This ceremony had been suspended for about sixty years after the tribe relocated to its current site. Various traditional competitions are extensions of this ritual. The Maolin District Office stated that participants from all walks of life are warmly welcome to join.

The Warriors’ March is a 5-kilometer team race with groups of three. The course includes five challenge stations: spear throwing to hunt wild boar, rope climbing to retrieve objects, wading through water, archery, and the final challenge of carrying a stone from the riverbank to the finish line — a symbolic act representing warriors bringing back the heads of enemies in ancient times. Teams must work together, and their finishing time is determined by the last member to cross the line. All team members are required to wear traditional loincloths and go topless.

The district office noted that the three Maolin sub-regions each possess their own unique languages and traditional festivals, making them invaluable cultural and tourism assets of Taiwan. Coupled with the area’s beautiful mountains, rivers, and scenery, it is an ideal destination for families to experience tribal culture.
