How can you get closer to the locals when visiting Bangkok? Learning to cook Thai food might be one of the best choices.
To cater to the growing number of travelers who love Thai cuisine, many cooking schools have sprung up in Bangkok. These schools offer full English instruction and can arrange for students to learn about spices in just one day, and prepare more than four Thai dishes, including soups, main courses, and desserts.

China Airlines noted that since 2008, its premium travel service has partnered with cooking schools to offer add-on cooking class experiences. Initially, only 10–20 customers opted for the program each year, but over the past three years, the number has surged to hundreds, showing increasing popularity. BAIPAI THAI COOKING SCHOOL, located in the suburbs of Bangkok, is set in a spacious garden complete with a small pond lined with various herbs and spices—students’ first task is to familiarize themselves with these ingredients. Thai cuisine uses a wide and diverse array of spices, and instructors explain that students will first learn to identify at least two types and understand how they’re used, forming the basic foundation of Thai cooking.

Basic lessons at the cooking school include dishes such as Thai sour and spicy soup, Pad Thai (stir-fried noodles), coconut milk desserts, and green papaya salad, with the sour and spicy soup and Pad Thai being the most popular. While learning the correct sequence of cooking steps is important, the real fun in Thai cooking lies in experimenting with unfamiliar spice combinations to create unexpectedly delicious dishes.
The method for making Pad Thai is quite simple: mix sugar, tamarind paste, eggs, and vegetables until the sauce thickens, then finish with a squeeze of lemon juice. Cooking school instructors also teach students how to plate the dish to enhance both its flavor and visual appeal. The 4-hour course at this school costs 2,200 Thai baht, or 2,000 baht when booked through China Airlines Premium Travel. The 4-hour session includes preparing four well-known Thai dishes and round-trip transportation from central Bangkok.
