Breaking News: Current Status of Hualien’s “Golden Needle Flower Sea on Liushishi Mountain” — Most Beautiful Around Late August

Hualien’s most anticipated summer tourism event, the “Liushishi Mountain Golden Needle Flower Festival,” has officially kicked off and will run until September 24. Regarding the blooming status of the golden needle flowers, which is the top concern for travelers, the Fuli Township Farmers’ Association reports that due to recent consecutive sunny days and little rainfall, the flowering period on Liushishi Mountain has been delayed by about 10 days on average. The flowers are expected to be at their most beautiful by the end of August.

The golden needle flower sea on Liushishi Mountain is a landmark tourist attraction in Fuli Township. Every August and September, vast fields of golden blooms cover the hillsides, creating undulating carpets of flowers that shimmer under the sunlight — often referred to as the “angels’ flower carpet.” Hiking up in the early morning also offers a chance to admire the sea of clouds while enjoying a bird’s-eye view of the Huatung Valley, making it a popular destination.

Local guides explain that golden needle flowers need both sunshine and water to bloom properly. However, with recent sunny and rain-free weather in Hualien, the flowers have struggled to bloom fully. As a result, compared to the same period in previous years, only about 20% of the flowers on Liushishi Mountain have bloomed so far, with some areas reaching around 40%. On average, the flowering season is delayed by 10 to 15 days, and the best time to see them is expected to be around the end of August.

Guides also note that the main spots in Hualien to enjoy golden needle flowers are Liushishi Mountain and Chike Mountain. The difference is that Liushishi Mountain has high vantage points where you can take in the entire flower sea with a wide panoramic view, and different observation platforms offer unique perspectives from varying heights. Chike Mountain lacks such prominent viewpoints, so visitors must stroll through the layered hillsides to appreciate the beauty up close — this is the biggest difference between the two flower seas.

The “Liushishi Mountain Golden Needle Flower Festival” is now underway. During the festival period, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, only vehicles with nine seats or fewer (including motorcycles) are permitted on the mountain roads. It’s important to note that traffic on Liushishi Mountain is one-way. All vehicles enter via Highway 9, kilometer marker 308.5, and exit via one of two routes: passenger cars take the “Wanning to Fuxing Tribe Connecting Road starting point (0Km)” down toward the Amei River (Dongli Village), while motorcycles follow the same path downhill.
