Tainan Shiyuegu’s “Sugar Crystal Drop” & “Hell Descent” – Experience the Thrill of Freefall

The Tainan “Shiyue Ren Tang Cultural & Creative Park,” transformed from a sugar refinery during the Japanese colonial era, has in recent years used the old sugar factory facilities to introduce fun yet adrenaline-pumping new activities. In addition to the new “extreme triathlon” combining the “Extreme Slide,” “Hell Descent,” and “High Altitude Climbing,” the newly launched 3-second freefall “Sugar Crystal Drop” lets participants truly feel the preciousness of life.

“Are you ready to jump?” the coach asks. Usually, players freeze at the top of the seven-story platform. Although the actual jump takes only about three seconds, many find it hard to take that leap. The longest anyone has waited before jumping is over 40 minutes.

This latest and most thrilling activity“Sugar Crystal Drop”is like an upgraded version of bungee jumping. Watching others do it from the ground doesn’t seem so scary. First, you put on your safety gear at the bottom—just climbing the seven-story staircase leaves you panting. Then, standing on the open platform and looking down is when the real terror hits. You can no longer hear your friends’ cheering from below, only the choice to take the plunge. For those few seconds with a blank mind, you’re already pale-faced by the time you reach the ground.
