A Century-Old LA Park’s Water Wave Sculpture Resembles a Silver Aurora in the Sky

Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles has recently made headlines due to a new art installation. The silver, shimmering, water-like high-altitude art piece has not only prompted tourists to snap photos non-stop but also made locals feel that the park’s atmosphere is vastly different from before.

According to arpaper.com, Pershing Square spans five acres and has a history of 150 years. For quite some time, it was underutilized, and locals didn’t have a particularly positive impression of the area. In 2015, residents and business owners came together to brainstorm ways to inject new energy into the space.

In addition to renovating the park itself, Los Angeles-based artists and students collaborated to create this stunning piece — the wind-driven Water Wave Sculpture (Liquid Shard), which extends from as low as 4 meters up to around 35 meters. When the wind blows, the visual impact of the entire piece is incredibly striking, resembling a school of fish underwater or a flock of birds in flight, or even a moving aurora. Though made of simple materials, the effect is powerful, bringing a fresh vibe to the area.
