Hiking to Lanyu: The Mysterious Alpine Sea of Datianchi

Many people have visited Lanyu, but I believe quite a few have not been to Datianchi. Compared to Xiaotianchi, the path to Datianchi is more challenging. Due to its higher difficulty level and lack of signage, online travel blogs often describe trips to Datianchi as “brave adventures” or “challenges.”

Datianchi is located in the southeast of Lanyu and is a volcanic crater that formed a lake through rainwater accumulation. It still retains its pristine forest appearance, surrounded by Dason Mountain, Wangnan Peak, and Aoben Ridge. The Tao people call it “DuWaWa,” which means “sea of the high mountains” or a place where “ghosts appear.” It was once a forbidden area for the Tao people, but in recent years, influenced by tourism and its breathtaking scenery, the taboo has been broken. It has become a hidden gem among travelers and an advanced hiking destination in Lanyu.

As someone who loves hiking, I added Datianchi to my itinerary as soon as I arrived in Lanyu. Every morning, I would look toward Datianchi from my homestay in Dongqing. The surroundings were all blue sky, except for a single cloud hovering above Datianchi, adding an even more mysterious aura.
