The popular meat and egg toast in Taichung — a delicious combination of thick slices of meat and sweet mayonnaise

The toast is stuffed with slices of meat and an egg. Though the combination seems simple and ordinary, the flavor of the meat slices really elevates the dish, attracting many people to line up for it.

Taichung’s meat and egg toast has been famous for a long time. Even before I went abroad, I had heard many friends talking about it. However, one day when I came to Taichung for an exhibition, I happened to stay at a guesthouse near the meat and egg toast place. Unfortunately, when I went there on a Monday, it was closed XD. So, full of lingering frustration, I made a special detour to try it again after coming to Taichung for the exhibition to make up for the previous disappointment.

The meat and egg toast shop is located on Jianxing Road in Taichung City, near Sogo and the National Museum of Natural Science, making its location quite convenient. However, the meat and egg toast was also selected as one of the “Top Ten Heroes” by Foodie Paradise, and after this endorsement, the lines of people waiting to buy it became even more endless.

The small shop actually has limited seating, but the chairs are arranged quite densely, and with the crowd of people lining up to order inside, the place looks very crowded, with somewhat chaotic traffic flow. By the time I arrived at the meat and egg toast shop that day, it was already past 10 a.m., but there were still quite a few people in line. It made me wonder if these people didn’t have jobs to go to XD.

Since I came alone, I didn’t order much—just the signature meat and egg toast and a milk tea. The meat and egg toast is simply made by spreading mayonnaise on toast, then adding an egg and slices of meat. The bread has had its crusts cut off so you don’t get any hard bites.

Signature Meat and Egg Toast (NT$40): The toast itself has a regular texture and isn’t toasted, and I personally prefer my toast a bit toasted with a firmer bite. But the soul of the meat and egg toast is definitely the meat slices—they are thick, with just the right firmness, and have a wonderfully fragrant roasted aroma. The taste isn’t overly salty either. Paired with sweet mayonnaise and the texture of a fried egg, this meat and egg toast is really quite delicious. No wonder so many people line up to buy it.

Milk Tea (NT$20): The milk tea costs NT$20 per cup. The milk tea here is richly flavored and not too sweet. While it didn’t leave a particularly wow impression, the taste is still pretty good overall.

This time in Taichung, I finally got to try the legendary meat and egg toast. The meat and egg combo really stood out and impressed me. Although I’m not a huge fan of the toast itself, the overall combination is still pretty good. Next time I’m in Taichung and nearby, I’d definitely want to try it again.
