Hidden gem snacks in Tamsui！ "Captain's Food Home" at the end of the riverside

Mitchell, Taste Awaits[Captain's Food Home]is a recently discovered treasure of an eatery, with its main signature snack beingBeef Tripe Dan Ban Noodlesandrice balls. And after some Googling, it seems no one has written a food review yet—it might really be a bit too remote?

Although Captain's Food Home is located atthe very end of Tamsui Old Street,tourists probably won’t know about it; almost all the diners are local residents. Finding local favorites that only the locals eat must mean it’s truly delicious, right?!

The small shopfront with its blue signboard doesn’t really look appealing from the outside, and you’d never guess it’s a noodle and snack shop.

Butthe origin of the name “Captain's Food Home”is quite intriguing. When I asked the owner, if I remember correctly, it’s becausethe owner’s father-in-law is a captain,so the restaurant displays some captain’s hats and old cameras the captain has collected. Too bad I was too busy eating to take photos~

There aren’t many seats inside Captain's Food Home—probably just enough for around ten people—and the atmosphere is very homey.

Plus, there are seats facing the river, which is pretty fun, right XD

There are little artworks by children on the walls that totally captivated me while waiting for my food. Can’t help it, I’ve been really into kids’ stuff lately XD

The menu mainly features Beef Tripe Dan Ban Noodles (with beef tendon, beef shank, and beef tripe), beef soup noodles, and rice balls, along with some cold side dishes, each plate for 30 NT.

The prices are all very affordable—pretty much dirt cheap, you could say?

Ever since the Lu Kang snack shop near Mitchell’s house closed down, I haven’t had good fried rice balls. It’s rare to find fried rice balls, so I definitely had to order some to try!!

The milky-white special sauce paired with homemade chiliand the outer layer of the rice ball has a delightfully crispy and tasty texture — you just can't wait to take a bite!

Granted, it might seem a bit odd to come all the way to Tamsui just for street food, but isn’t that what everyone does when they visit Tamsui? XD

Also, I felt that Tamsui’s “A-Gei” really wasn’t that impressive — I was left feeling pretty empty afterward.

The rice balls at Captain’s Gourmet Home are probably the best street food I’ve had in Tamsui so far!

Although it doesn’t have that strong “Tamsui flavor,” good taste is more important, right? The Q-textured, thick, and solid rice ball skin, plus that satisfyingly crisp outer crunch — I absolutely love it!

And the filling isn’t skimpy either — it’s just the right amount.

Dan Ban Mian – NT$40

The Dan Ban Mian has a bit of beef broth mixed in, making it perfectly balanced between dry and moist. The noodles are chewy and satisfying. Even though there’s nothing but half a marinated egg as topping, it still gives a great sense of fulfillment. What kind of magic is this?

Ever since discovering this place on this trip,Captain’s Gourmet Home,every time I think of Tamsui, I think of it. Last time I revisited Tamsui with my family, I actually wanted to walk all the way here to eat, but with my grandma in tow, we couldn’t go too far — such a pity. Otherwise, I’m sure she and the others would’ve loved it too!

It’s just that this noodle shop is more of a casual eatery, so it’s not really suitable for group gatherings. But if you ever find yourself strolling around Tamsui and get tired of the usual Tamsui A-Gei and fishball/squidball snacks, why not walk a little further back, enjoy a riverside stroll, take in the scenic views, and make your way toward this delicious treat :)
