A bit spooky — Checking into a century-old Shanghai hotel and encountering a revolutionary hero

Many people traveling abroad prefer old hotels and inns with a history of over a hundred years to new ones, as the classic Chinese architecture offers a unique vibe. However, Jeff once heard from a friend at a dinner gathering that they dared not stay in such old lodgings because they might encounter paranormal phenomena.

The friend then shared an experience of their acquaintance, Mr. B. On one occasion, Mr. B joined a Shanghai media delegation and stayed at a century-old hotel. After checking in, with about half an hour to spare before the next group activity, he decided to rest in his room. Once inside, Mr. B lay down on the bed, but soon found himself unable to move. Then he faintly heard the sound of soft snoring coming from beside him. He tried to wiggle his fingers and slowly turned his head toward the source of the noise, only to find a slightly chubby elderly man wearing a traditional blue Chinese robe and mandarin jacket lying beside him. However, the old man didn’t seem hostile, so Mr. B went ahead and fell asleep.

He was later awakened by the ringing of the telephone—it turned out the group had already started and someone was calling him. When he turned to the other side of the double bed, the elderly man in the blue robe and mandarin jacket was gone. Mr. B got up and went to the lobby to join the others. Hanging in the hotel lobby were portraits of famous people and revolutionary heroes who had once stayed there—and he spotted a revolutionary hero who looked exactly like the elderly man who had been lying beside him.
