That was over 10 years ago when my friend was still a rookie journalist—let’s call her Ms. B for short. As a freelance reporter, she often had to travel around for assignments. One winter, to prepare the next Taichung special feature, Ms. B spent nine days in Taichung, shooting from morning till night. Just as the interviews were almost wrapped up with only three days left, she was suddenly assigned to shoot several popular night view spots in Taichung. After finishing the original assignments, Ms. B and the photographer drove to a night view spot on the hill behind a certain university.

Since it was a night view spot, the places with the best views were naturally snapped up early by business-savvy shop owners. After looking around, Ms. B and the photographer walked into a teahouse with absolutely no customers. The owner was a middle-aged man who smiled warmly and kindly recommended tea and snacks to them. In the end, they ordered two cups of hot orange tea, and the owner went into the kitchen in the back to prepare them.

After a very, very long time, the tea still hadn’t arrived, and both of them found it strange. Ms. B also needed to use the restroom, so she walked toward the entrance where the owner had disappeared to ask where the toilet was. As soon as she entered the kitchen, a pack of dogs suddenly rushed out as if they’d gone mad, barking with all their might. Ms. B turned to the owner, who was busy in the kitchen, dumbfounded, and was just about to speak when she saw him with a dark expression, vigorously chopping up some unidentifiable meat with a cleaver—but Ms. B and the photographer hadn’t ordered any food at all.

Ms. B felt a chill run down her spine but still managed to say tremulously, “Boss, your dogs...”, at which point the boss looked up, his entire face dark and grim, and in a low voice completely different from his earlier warm tea-pitching tone, said: “...Who told you to come in?” Frightened, Ms. B immediately ran out. The photographer quickly finished the shoot, and the two of them jumped out of the car and headed down the mountain.

Once inside the car, the atmosphere was silent. The photographer, with a deathly pale face, drove on in silence. After driving for a while, Ms. B suddenly said, “Hey, we’ve already driven past that Meteor Garden Teahouse twice.” The photographer didn’t respond and continued driving in silence. By the fifth time they passed the Meteor Garden Teahouse, Ms. B finally realized something was wrong, growing even quieter as the car periodically drove past that same Meteor Garden Teahouse again and again.

The road on the back of the mountain was extremely narrow—one side was a cliff, the other a shoulder-high thicket of weeds and trees. It was so narrow that passing was impossible, and even driving in one direction would scrape the side mirrors against the leaves. The side near the cliff was so close that even a person couldn’t squeeze through. As they drove, Ms. B suddenly let out an “eh?”

“There’s someone running up ahead...” Ms. B said, but the photographer didn’t reply, silently continuing to drive past the runner. Then Ms. B suddenly thought, “There’s no room on the side for anyone to be running. If we go past, we’ll definitely hit him. So who was that runner I just saw...?”
