The Australian Open is coming – plenty of summer events in Melbourne

Melbourne, in the midst of summer, will host a variety of events during this period. From January 19 to February 1, the 2015 Australian Open will take place as planned. As the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments to be held each year, it not only attracts tennis fans but also encourages more visitors to come and experience the vibrant summer charm of Australia.

The total prize money for the 2015 Australian Open amounts to a staggering AUD 36.3 million, the highest among all four Grand Slam tournaments, with the champion set to receive a cheque worth AUD 3 million. After renovation, Margaret Court Arena at Melbourne Park will become the only venue within the complex featuring three courts with retractable roofs.

“The Australian Open is one of the world’s most influential tennis events, drawing the attention of hundreds of millions of sports enthusiasts every year.” Victoria hopes to leverage this tournament to attract more Taiwanese tourists to visit Melbourne and immerse themselves in the city’s passionate sporting atmosphere and energetic vibe as the “City of Sporting Events.”

Li Wei, Greater China Director of Tourism Victoria, said that during the annual tournament, Melbourne enjoys bright summer sunshine. In addition to the thrilling matches, visitors can also enjoy a range of cultural and artistic activities, such as the Paul Gaultier Design Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, or viewing the works of contemporary Chinese video artist Yang Fudong at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in the exhibition titled “Close-Up: Yang Fudong.”
