Beep beep～Open the Anywhere Door and see Shizuka & Doraemon on the cute train

For many children and adults alike, the adorable and imaginative Doraemon is one of their most cherished childhood memories. In Toyama Prefecture, Japan, there’s a “Doraemon Train” that’s not only filled with Doraemon elements but also features a variety of magical gadgets that make everyone exclaim, “Kawaii!”

Since the creator of Doraemon, Fujiko F. Fujio, often depicted Doraemon as being from the future, it’s established that he was born in the year 2112. To celebrate 100 years before his birth—in 2012—the city of Takaoka specially painted a Doraemon-themed design on the streetcar that connects Takaoka and Shinminato on the Nihonkai Myoko Line, allowing Doraemon to “ride” through the city. Since its launch in 2012, over 300,000 people have ridden the Doraemon Train, making it Takaoka’s unique blue charm.

The Doraemon Train is designed with two cars, featuring the exact same blue color as the character himself, along with a red band wrapping around the entire train, symbolizing Doraemon’s neck scarf. At the front of the train, you can see Doraemon playfully winking, and on his chest is a special bronze plaque clearly marking his unique identity. As for the light pink doors, anyone can easily recognize: “This is the Anywhere Door!”

After passing through the Anywhere Door into the train cabin, the ceiling is painted with illustrations of characters like Nobita and Gian, and the glass windows also feature drawings of each character. If you look closely, on the sides of the seats, you can also spot familiar gadgets such as the Time Machine, Anywhere Door, and Air Cannon. Even the handrails on the train are adorned with Doraemon and Dora the Kid figurine accessories—designer creativity is visible everywhere.

At the train coupling area, there’s also a life-sized illustration of Doraemon where kids can compare their height with him. (Note: Doraemon’s height is 129.3 cm, which is the average height of a 4th-grade Japanese girl in 1969.)

If passengers get off at Takaoka Station, they can also walk to the Doraemon Promenade. There are 12 bronze statues of Doraemon characters here, each posed in lively stances waiting to take photos with visitors. For Doraemon fans, this is definitely a must-visit spot.
