A simple yellow diamond shines in the night – the century-old "Taipei Post Office" regains its splendor

The Taipei Post Office will no longer be shrouded in darkness at night, but will become a yellow diamond radiating soft light. After years of restoration, the Taipei Post Office has reemerged before the public with a brand-new look on the 18th. At night, lighting is also used to add a different charm to this historic landmark.

Established on July 29, 1898, the Taipei Post Office was originally a wooden single-story building. It was destroyed by fire in 1913 and subsequently designed and constructed by renowned Japanese architect Toshikazu Kuriyama. The interior features a two-story high lobby supported by fluted decorative paired columns, and the classical carvings on the columns and ceiling exhibit exceptional refinement and elegance. In addition to using exposed aggregate concrete for the exterior walls, the building also adopted light brown “air defense color” small ceramic tiles produced by the Beitou Kiln Factory, in line with the practical needs of the time. The Taipei Post Office was designated as a municipal third-grade historic site on August 14, 1992.

However, over time, the exterior walls suffered severe weathering. In 2006, the Taipei City Cultural Affairs Bureau began restoration work to restore the original architectural features and honor the historical value of the heritage site. The project was completed by the end of 2014, revealing a renewed and magnificent appearance to the public.

To showcase the diverse facets of the heritage site and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Postal Museum, the Taipei Post Office has specially set up the “Postal Museum Taipei North Gate Branch” on the second floor as an extension of the Postal Museum. From now until March 15, the branch is hosting the “Three Sheep Bring Prosperity – Zodiac Stamp Exhibition,” featuring both domestic and international New Year stamps related to the zodiac sheep, as well as festive floral arrangements. There is also an interactive area for families, attracting visitors of all ages.
